Hidden Tips
Plan your meals to maximize your stay. The Canadiana Motel does not serve breakfast or any kind of room service, so you will have to go out and find food. Luckily there are a few good places nearby. For that old-school diner breakfast, check out Cravings Family Restaurant or the Sunset Grill-both favorites among locals just a short drive away. If it's dinner you're after, the Grey Rose serves up some respectable pub grub or pick up groceries from the supermarket stores in the mall area to use with your in-room microwave and fridge.
Another key factor in what makes the place work is how well they manage its “retro” nature. The rooms have individual under-window heating and air conditioning units. Effective, but also a bit noisy; light sleepers should probably set the temperature before going to bed and turn the fan off. Since there is no second story to worry about stairs, there is reason to be concerned with winter drafts-unless you happen to stay sometime in July or August! If your visit takes place during January or February, bring slippers for the room as the floors can get cold.
Also, double check on the office hours when you make your booking. Not all small family run motels have their front office open until late at night-say 10:00 PM or 11:00 PM- in fact most of them close earlier. If bad weather or traffic is going to make you arrive late, it becomes very important to call the owners during daytime and arrange for a key pickup because they will be more than happy to wait but need assurance that you are actually coming so that they dont lock up for the night without you.
